I would have to say that the answer to your question is anticipation. People like to watch sports because the games have a potentially unknown outcome. It's kind of like gambling. Whereas other television programs generally follow a predictable series of events. Some people place bets to make games more interesting, some form intense rivalries and other do as you say and drink beer and pig out. Besides that there is always the chance of a nasty sports related injury =p.
